Relationship between Research and What Teachers Know
Two commonly held views shows the relationship between research and what teachers know. First, theoreticians and researchers formulate theories, develop concepts, and carry out 'pure' research within certain disciplines. The findings of these studies are applied in education and lead to improvement in classroom performance...
Second, an educational need, demand, or deficiency is discovered which stimulates research and theory related to it. The findings are applied and the need is met, the demand fulfilled, or the deficiency remedied. (Stern, Wesche, and Harley, 1978: 397)
If so, why has educational practice not necessarily been visibly improved in spite of a high level of research activity?
Is the conception of the relationship between research and practice at fault? (p. 398)
